Super Bowl Extra Credit Project Due Feb 29th

SUPER BOWL PROJECT

Here is your chance to finally watch TV for homework.

The Super Bowl is a BIG business. Because of the massive amounts of people that watch the game, the commercials in the Super Bowl are often more talked about than the game itself. For this reason, the cost for companies to have a commercial during the game is very expensive. This year, the cost for a 30 second commercial is 3 million dollars.

Your assignment, if you choose to do this, is to keep track of ALL the commercials during the game and make a bar chart of all of the companies and how much money they spent to advertise on the game. What you need to do is write down the name of the company of each commercial (Coke, Pepsi, etc) and time how long each one is. Most will either be 30 seconds, 45 seconds, or 1 minute. A 30 second commercial is 3 million dollars, 45 seconds is 4.5 million dollars, and a 1 minute commercial would be 6 million dollars.

Many companies will show more than one commercial during the game. So you will turn in two things for this project. One will be a listing of all the companies and how long their total time of commercials was. It will look something like this:

Pepsi – 4 minutes

CareerBuilder – 2 minutes

Gillette – 3 minutes

Bud Light – 5 minutes

Then, you figure out how much the company would have to spend to get that many minutes of commercial time. In the above example, Pepsi would have to spend 3 million dollars times 8 (there are 8 sets of 30 seconds in 4 minutes). This would be $24,000,000.

Finally, you will take all the companies and make a bar chart on a piece of long paper or posterboard or using the computer.

Your chart does not need to be typed. It does need to be colorful and legible.

This assignment is due no later than February 29th

but feel free to turn it in early. This is an extra credit assignment. You can get up to 100 points on this assignment. This project will REPLACE your lowest test score at the end of the school year before report cards come out.

Points are awarded the following way:

*Accurate list of all the companies and the total amount of money spent -40 points

*Bar chart made on the computer or paper (using rulers) that depicts the information on the list – 40 points

*Neatness and creativity in the chart – 20 points.

This should be an easy 100%. If you are not going to put effort into the project, please do not do it. Grades lower than 85% will not be put in the gradebook.
